A life skill outside drama as well as in class...

So many children when they start at Drama Kids or DK Youth Theatre answer a question with 'I don't know'. Maybe they are scared of giving the 'wrong' answer. Maybe they don't know how to be creative and use their imagination. Within weeks we don't hear 'I don't know' any more - the answer might be conventional, it might be wacky, it might be the same as someone else, or unique. But they will have something to say.

We are delighted to announce that Drama Kids is running a full-day animation and drama workshop in partnership with Aardman, the creators of Shaun the Sheep and Wallace and Gromit.

Your child will
• Take part in a Drama Kids session, building skills in storytelling, voice and character
• Design and build a clay model with a professional Aardman modelmaker
• Create a storyboard and background
• Start animating their character using Aardman’s app
• Take home their finished model and a certificate

Super proud of amazing student Llywelyn who gained a Distinction (top grade) in the RSL teaching assistant in the performing arts qualification. Equivalent to an A Level it is worth UCAS points.

Llywelyn has been with the academy for 11 + years and is the first student in the UK to achieve the qualification through Drama Kids!

More students are currently working towards the qualification at Drama Kids York and North Yorkshire.

STUDENT GAINS PLACE AT PRESTIGIOUS CAPA COLLEGE

Over 1000 applicants auditioned for 250 places at prestigious CAPA college in Wakefield which provides full time Arts training and education for students aged 16 - 19. Youth Theatre student Joe will be joining CAPA in September 25 after taking his GCSEs this summer. Joe joined Drama Kids when he was 10 and we are all SO proud of him and his achievements.

Joe is also a Studio Assistant and working towards the RSL qualification Level 3 Teaching Assistant in the Performing Arts with Drama Kids.

GARFORTH LOWER PRIMARY

Amazingly proud of Seth in our Driffield class. I received an email from CBBC looking for talented children to take part in the show and sent it to the parents of all our students. Seth auditioned and was chosen to be part of the show on Saturday 18th November. When he joined a couple of years ago he lacked confidence. He's come such a long way and has much further to go...

The next best thing to a real sleepover is a drama sleepover! Our Lower Primary child took part in a play complete with a pillow fight! They even built a den out of their sleeping bags and blankets and turned it into a spaceship!

Unique plays for all age groups!

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Primary children were tradesmen rehearsing a play for the Duke's Wedding. They loved discovering Shakespearean trades, playing pranks like Puck and waking up to find they had a donkey's head just like Bottom.

Our older Youth Theatre students discussed the relationship between Helena and Demetrius, it's relevance to modern day relationships and worked on a mini script - Shakespeare style or their own version. Their choice.

Helping children feel comfortable with social interaction

COVID has hit some young children's confidence and social interaction skills badly. Once confident, friendly 3 / 4 year olds they are now shy 5 / 6 year olds afraid of the world outside the home. Several have joined our classes this term. Within 2 weeks we've seen their confidence in themselves and their ability to speak to other children in the group come on leaps and bounds... it's fabulous to see and makes me so proud of our Development Through Drama Programme and inspiring teachers.

Huge Development in Drama Skills

Youth Theatre students worked in small groups to create their own TV Advert for Flexi-Hair. Complete with slogan, jingle and special offers. All in 30-60 seconds! Creative planning and rehearsing skills were needed and we were amazed at what they achieved in just 20 minutes.

Celebrating the last week of term...

This week (7th - 11th December) sees the final classes of this term. Christmas dress up for Christmas fun! Last year the clutch went on the car and I broke down half way up Garrowby Hill on my way to Driffield. I was, of course, dressed as an elf to the amusement of the breakdown recovery driver! Creepy Crawly Fun!

Children of all ages loved making creepy crawly sock puppets (or just bringing a spare sock) to the class. And children's interaction with their puppets was amazing. Less confident children will talk to their puppet first and then go on to engage with other children in the class. More confident children widen their vocabulary, creativity and characterisation as they incorporate their puppet into their acting.

Anger in the Baked Bean Tin...

Children have many feelings pent up inside, especially at the moment. They may not always be able to articulate them or express them appropriately. Helen O'Grady Drama classes offer them the opportunity to let those emotions out in a safe and nurturing environment.

Here they are expressing ANGER at being squashed in the baked bean tin. They may not realise it, but all that anger swirling around inside is given a chance to come out without them having to give a reason for their feelings.

Props Bring A Play to Life...

Our younger students 'baked' drama cookies using their props. Popped them in the 'oven', decorated them and then BY THE POWER OF DRAMA turned into the cookie shapes and escaped before they could be eaten!

Pirate Week... Under the Sea... just 2 of this term's dress ups

Seeing their teacher dressed up to teach the class is huge fun for the children. And it inspires them to have a go at making their own costume from things they have at home. We NEVER expect parents to buy things for our dress ups (unless they want to).

Our youngest students were chased by triceratops and had to fight off pterodactyls. Older primary students chose to go to Victorian England. Youth Theatre ended up on a protest march. The policemen who said women were only good for making sandwiches in the kitchen didn't end up too happy!

Act in a new play every week...

Letters are leaving their books and whizzing around the sky. How do they look? Feel? Smell? Are you brave enough to taste one? We can't move around the hall as much as we used to, but we can use levels and move around on our socially distanced spots to create drama in our plays!

First Week Back - A HUGE success!

Socially distanced classes are still as much FUN!

Using cones and spot markers to make sure the children are at least 1 metre apart at all times doesn't mean classes aren't as much fun as ever! Everyone was delighted to be back face to face last night and we even had 3 new students come along for a taster session... with current government group size restrictions some classes (including this one) are almost full!

Everyone loves recognition!

All our students were emailed a certificate which kind parents printed out for them. ALL valued members of our drama family received them. Not just the ones who took part in online drama this term. We may not have seen them for a while, but we still care about each and every one of them.

Exciting new ways to take part in drama!

Drama and Creativity combined

Mini scripts give our students the opportunity to work independently for around 10 minutes of the class in pairs or 3s on a short script - often creating their own ending to the dilemma they face. What do you do when you find yourself stuck in a lift? They then watch each other perform and give positive peer feedback - learning not just from their own performances, but those of others.

Breaking News... Volcano erupts near Pompeii

Sometimes our plays tie in with National Curriculum topics. The children were so excited to wear their togas to drama and be Romans for the day. Some knew about Pompeii before the class, they all did by the end! Drama is a great way to learn new facts.

Flying Carpet Adventure in Lower Primary

What do you NOT want to happen at the end of a drama class? The key to get stuck in the lock!!! After a lot of jiggling I managed to lock the door and remove the key. Hopefully a good squirt of WD40 from the caretaker will mean a much smoother operation next week. Just grateful it didn't happen when I arrived - drama in the car park... not a great thought.

Although I've held a basic Safeguarding Qualification for several years now, yesterday, after a 5 hour training course in Birmingham, specially designed for Helen O'Grady Principals, I achieved Intermediate Level Safeguarding Training. Not everyone can be at every rehearsal every week - and this week seems to have been the week for being cast members down. Doesn't stop us having tons of fun! And the children love it when I have to be 3 characters at once - laughing as I zoom around the stage at 100 miles per hour... The hour just flies by for all of us!

Teaching stage fighting techniques is the best fun ever! One of our Youth Theatre plays this year contains a fight scene. So in Driffield on Friday and Earswick on Saturday I taught our teenagers how to act like they were beating the seven bells out of each other without an injury in sight! Punches, slaps, kicks and hair pulling - they loved it and the scene they created was so effective. Can't wait to see it fitted into the play.

Had a wonderful conversation with a mum this week. Her 5 year old daughter attends another drama group, as well as ours. She was deciding which one to drop after Easter. After watching her taking part in Parent Day her daughter is definitely continuing with us. She commented how much more confident and involved her daughter was in our presentation.

This morning (amongst other things) I'm writing certificates for our amazing students. Every single child will receive a certificate on Parent Day this term whether they have been with us for 2 weeks or 6 years. Youth Theatre students don't have a Parent Day in Term 2, so those students who've been with us 7, 8, 9, 10 etc... years will be getting their next Award on Performance Day in the summer term.

I felt hugely proud of my Harrogate Superstars last night. Sadly we had to cancel the class the week before due to the snow and ice - last night every single one of them was there ready and raring to go! With one week less to prepare Verbal Dynamics for Parent Day they threw themselves 100% into our last rehearsal and were amazing!!! Can't wait for their parents to see them perform next week.

I've just received a bundle of letters from the children at Wigginton School who I did drama workshops for a couple of weeks ago. What a wonderful thing for the teacher to organise - I'm bowled over! It's lovely (and very interesting) to hear what their favourite parts of the session were. And the fact that many of them end by asking me to come back soon because they releee, releee, releee enjoyed it has really touched me.

Our students love snow! I don't! Wonder which camp you fall into? One thing is for sure though... the show will go on even if the snow goes on! Classes will run unless the main roads become blocked (highly unlikely). The great thing about living locally to one of my studios is that I often bump into the parents of my students as I'm out walking the dog. Had a lovely catch-up chat this morning when I was able to tell one mum how brilliantly her daughter is doing, whilst she told me how much her daughter loves drama! Children really can make me laugh - especially when they get the wrong end of the stick. We had a boy playing The Master (the captain of the ship) who was horrified when I said the mast had snapped in half. 'I don't want to be snapped in half!' he said worriedly. Much relief all round when I explained I meant the ship's mast and not him.

Like many people I juggle my working life with family life. Daughter is home from Uni this week, which has its advantages when she comes to classes and gives me a helping hand. Not so great when you get a phone call saying 'Mum, the dog's run off!!!' Thankfully the dog came back (following its new friend) and the walk went on without me having to dash out to perform an emergency rescue service!

We're acting out the opening scene of The Tempest in classes this week - and I just couldn't resist the pun, sorry! What's wonderful is that so many children remember loving Shakespeare week last year and are so excited about doing a new play this year. The shipwreck is especially dramatic and it makes my day when someone says 'Can we do it again?' at the end.

What better way to start off the half term than by going to Wigginton School to do free drama workshops with the Year 1 and 2 classes? In my 10 years + of drama teaching no one has ever locked me IN the building before - but I guess there's a first time for everything!

Last night I arrived at my Heslington class to find the door open and a workman leaving the building. I smiled, said hello and went in to start setting up. 5 minutes later I decided to nip to the loo. Good job I did. The workman had left, shut the door AND LOCKED IT BEHIND HIM!!! I know buildings need to be left secure - but with the next user safely inside??? Good job I noticed before all the children started arriving!

Driving in the dark

One of the downsides of drama teaching is having to drive back in the dark from classes for 6 months of the year. I don't like driving in the dark and I seem to have been doing it forever now! Then last night, there was a beautiful full moon all the way back from Harrogate. A joy to view through my windscreen!

Had one of those absolutely amazing classes in Heslington yesterday. Timing was spot on, we had a couple of new students joining us - all the children were full of enthusiasm, creativity and dramatic acting! A joy to spend an hour with - and the time just flew by...

So I've just tripped over my own feet, fallen up the stairs and spilled hot tea all over my hand in the process. The good news is I narrowly missed deluging the dog by a whisker. She was pretty startled by my dramatic cry though!

The rollercoaster is finally slowing down! So I've managed to send out dates for Parent Day and Summer Productions to the parents of all our students - been on my to-do list for over a fortnight. Now off to prepare tonight's class, walk the dog, pay hall bills and do my accounts. Oh yes, and remember to eat lunch!

I remember one of our Youth Theatre students who came to a Lower Primary Bring A Friend class years ago - 6 years on she's still with the Academy still doing great acting!

I went to Poppleton Road School this morning to do some drama workshops with the Year 2s. They were so enthusiastic and I saw some fabulous creative acting! At the end one girl said, 'Can you come to our school again?' and a boy said, 'You are the best drama teacher ever!' Made getting up at 5.45am to walk the dog before I set off worthwhile! Looking forward to some of them coming along to try out our classes soon...

The Printer is Dead... Long Live the Printer!

Wouldn't it be lovely if life ran smoothly? Didn't really want to spend Sunday morning replacing the printer when mine decided it had reached the End Of Its Life (as it proudly announced) stopping in the middle of a crucial job! But you can't run a business without a printer and even my creativity didn't stretch to simply imagining one and hoping for the best. Thankfully the new one is getting to grips with its workload brilliantly and I'm up and running again.

Let me share with you the funny thing which happened yesterday. I arrived to teach my Heslington class to discover the floor covered (and I mean covered - you could barely see it) with flat pack kitchen cabinets in various states of assembly - and 2 workmen, music blaring out, putting them together. Dramatically (how else?) I gasped... but I have a class in here in 15 minutes! The lovely men, who had no idea I was due, quickly moved the lot! I didn't believe it could be done, but by the time my students started arriving the room was almost clear and we sat up the far end to do the register whilst the rest was cleared. Makes a good story and shows that even after 10 years in the job there are still some things which can take me by surprise!

What really impresses me about the children in our classes is their generous spirits. Last night, paired in mini scripts, we had a situation where 2 children both wanted to be the same character. We used the 'which hand is it in' method to choose who played which part. The child who didn't get the part she wanted did brilliantly with the part she ended up with. She gave it 100% and performed with confidence. No fussing or sulking. A far more valuable skill than being a great actor!

It's very easy to make suggestions - far less easy to follow them - especially in challenging times! We've had a car break down last week, which means I'm having to spend more time delivering the letters to schools myself (with less time to do everything else). This morning I realised it's giving me opportunity to meet people in those schools I don't normally visit, so instead of grouching about the extra workload I'm happy that I've chatted to more lovely school staff than usual.

We had new students trying out our Youth Theatre classes last week. Sometimes I think it is harder for teenagers to take the plunge and go somewhere new than it is for 5 year olds. They are more self-conscious and anxious about new experiences. They come in unsure, nervous and uncomfortable - and leave having had a brilliant time saying they are definitely coming back next week! New doesn't always have to be scary... it can be the start of something amazing!

Been busy with emails and phone calls all this morning booking students in for Free Trial Sessions - love the communication part of my job, there are so many lovely people out there. One class is already fully booked and we haven't reached the end of the first week yet - amazing!!! Can't wait to meet all these wonderful new children.

Car Drama!

2 days into the new term is NOT when you want your car to give you nightmares! Last night, driving home from class, I drove over some debris in the road which made a loud clunk under my car. There was then a noisy rattling sound for several miles. With my wonderful vivid imagation I conjoured up a lost exhaust, the car suddenly stopping in the middle of the road - or even (told you I have a vivid imagination!) bursting into flames!!!

And then just as suddenly the noise stopped and all was back to normal. Jon says I probably picked up a plastic bottle which got stuck to the bottom for a bit before falling off. Quite enough drama for me, thank you. Hoping for a smooth drive to Heslington later today...

Our children have fantastic imaginations. Last night's class finished with a quick, fun activity where the children got their foot stuck in an imaginary bucket. It really captured their imaginations and several of them hopped back to their parents with their bucket still stuck to their foot! Hope they'd managed to get it off before they got out of bed this morning.

It's not just children who make new friends in our classes. We have friends coming round later today who we got to know when their daughter joined my drama class. I love the way that several of my friends started off as students' parents and have grown into people who share the ups and downs of my life.
